Currently, the crime victims compensation act prohibits financial assistance to victims of crime that occur in a correctional facility. Senate Bill 845, introduced by Senator Tom Casperson (R – District 38), removes this prohibition if the prosecutor supports the claim. This bill will recognize incarcerated people and their families can also be crime victims that are worthy of compensation for their loss.
This bill will make Michigan’s crime victims compensation system fairer and more reflective of the harm caused by crime to people who are incarcerated. We support this bill and were pleased to see a unanimous vote of support at the Senate Judiciary committee on April 17, 2018. We hope to see a vote on SB 845 by the full Senate soon.
