Lucas Day, Communications Intern

Lucas Day joined Safe & Just Michigan in the fall of 2022 as a master’s of social work intern. Raised in Northern Michigan, Lucas graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2020 before spending a year writing for a small paper in the Upper Peninsula. Lucas returned to Michigan State to earn a master’s degree in social work with a particular interest in amplifying the voices of people who face discrimination.

“All my favorite stories I wrote as a journalist involved people who overcame challenges,” Lucas said. “But too often, these challenges were a result of systemic or explicit discrimination. There were challenges that shouldn’t have existed in the first place.”

Most recently, Lucas worked as an intern for the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness. There, he saw the mountain of challenges that people with criminal records must overcome to access even the most basic resources.

Lucas lives in East Lansing and is expecting to graduate with a master’s degree in social work and organization and community leadership in the spring of 2023.
