The evening includes:
- A keynote by 2017 Pulitzer Prize winner Dr. Heather Ann Thompson, author of Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy and noted criminal justice activist
- Robert Rooks, vice president of the Alliance for Safety and Justice, a national leader in the criminal justice movement as a featured speaker
- Current news on criminal justice reforms and legislation underway from CAPPS’s staff and legislators
- A brief election for members of the Board of Directors
- An opportunity to learn how to advance reform in Michigan
Last year’s event attracted over 200 people – a wonderful mix of advocates, lawmakers, business leaders, formerly incarcerated people, crime survivors, faith-based groups, families of the incarcerated, lobbyists, MDOC representatives, the media, and others.
There was tremendous energy in the room as people from Grand Rapids to Detroit and across the political spectrum gathered to share, learn, and inspire one another.

Speakers biographies
Dr. Heather Ann Thompson, Detroit native, University of Michigan historian, and author of the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prize-winning author of Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy, is our keynote speaker.

Robert Rooks is the co-founder and vice president of the Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ). He oversees all of ASJ’s state-based advocacy strategies and campaigns. He is the organizing director of Californians for Safety and Justice.
